ALL Ireland-winning footballer and high-profile 'No' campaigner Ger Brennan has joined Fianna Fáil.

The 29-year-old teacher, who plays for Dublin and St Vincent's, has joined his local Cumann on Dublin's north side.

There is speculation he is in the running to become Fianna Fáil’s candidate in the Dublin Central constituency.

But Mr Brennan said he has no immediate plans to run for a Dáil seat in the next general election.

He told the Irish Independent: "The larger picture is that you never know what the future holds but certainly in the next few years it's not my focus.

"If you were to follow me around in my life for a couple of days you'd see how busy it is in terms of work and sports.

"I'd rarely get 10 minutes for myself so there wouldn't be a chance of me doing that

The Dublin player is said to have the backing of supporters of former taoiseach Bertie Ahern and his former election agent, Chris Wall.

A graduate of Maynooth College, Mr Brennan teaches religion and acts as a school chaplain at St Kevins College in Ballygall in Dublin.

He was a high-profile 'No' campaigner in the Republic's recent same-sex marriage referendum.

Before the vote, he told the Irish Independent: "I am voting "No" because I don't want our Constitution to deny that it is a good thing for a child to have a mother and a father".

Fianna Fáil has had no TD in the Dublin Central constituency since 2011.
