A 42-YEAR-OLD man arrested by police investigating the paramilitary-style shooting of a teenager in west Belfast has been released unconditionally.

The man was arrested in west Belfast on Friday night in connection with the attack on a 16-year-old in Aitnamona Crescent on Sunday December 18.

He was released unconditionally on Christmas Eve.

The teenager, thought to be from the Turf Lodge area, was shot in both legs on waste ground.

In the wake of the shooting, Chief Inspector Norman Hanslet described the attack as "blatant child abuse".

The finger of blame had initially pointed towards dissident republicans, with Óglaigh na hÉireann (ONH) behind a series of similar attacks in both the Colin and Springfield Road areas in the past six months.

However, using a recognised codeword, ONH claimed on Friday that it did not carry out the shooting of the 16-year-old.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact officers on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
