DUP MLA William Humphrey has called for more protection to be given to residents of the Lower Oldpark following attacks on property.

Car windscreens were smashed and wing mirrors damaged in the overnight attacks.

The mainly unionist area has been subjected to sectarian attacks in the past.

Mr Humphrey said wing mirrors were ripped off six cars in Shannon Street and on the lower Oldpark Road.

Windscreens and side windows were smashed on two further cars in the early hours of Monday morning.

"Many of the victims of this attack have disabilities and need their vehicles in order to attend medical appointments. The damage to their cars is deeply upsetting as well as causing severe stress and difficulty", he said.

"The vast majority of society will be unaware that the Lower Oldpark community is having to endure this continuing stream of disgraceful sectarian attacks in this modern era.

"It is utterly unacceptable that residents regularly suffer sectarian attacks on their houses and property.

"I have spoken to senior PSNI officers to push for a thorough investigation which would bring the perpetrators of this shameful attack to justice and for increased patrolling to protect the Lower Oldpark community.

"I appeal for calm and urge anyone who can assist this investigation to pass on whatever information they have", Mr Humphrey added.
