The owner of the former Havelock House site in Belfast has formally submitted an application to build 104 social housing units at the Ormeau Road location.

Banbridge-based Lotus Property controversially demolished the ex-UTV headquarters in early January, despite pleas from heritage campaigners.

The demolition went ahead before the developer launched a consultation website outlining its plans.

Lotus Property, which is part of the group behind the Junction and Boulevard retail parks, has now submitted its application under subsidiary Genova North West Limited.

Lotus said it adjusted the residential proposal in response to the community engagement.

It features 24-one bedroom and 64 two-bed units, including 16 two-storey homes.

Some 35 units have been designated for the over 55s.

The scheme has been developed in association with social housing provider Clanmill.

Olympian Homes previously failed in its bid to develop 270 build-to-rent apartments on the south Belfast site.

Alastair Coulson, managing director of Lotus Property, said: “We have listened to the views of local people and are pleased to submit a scheme that we believe now better reflects the community’s expectations.

“We are grateful to all those within the local community who took the time to engage with us on our proposals, and we are now submitting a scheme we can all be very proud of.

“We now hope for a timely progression through the planning process to allow us to move forward with delivering these much-needed homes.”

Lotus Property is also developing 724 student accommodation units on Donegall Street, Belfast, opposite St Patrick’s Church.
