My journey in the hospitality industry began as a pot washer in a local hotel. It was a part-time summer job that ignited a passion for the dynamic world of hospitality.

As I progressed through the ranks, from the Firmdale Hotels graduate scheme to roles with Hotel du Vin and The Atlantic Hotel, I gained an understanding of luxury hospitality operations. Each position offered unique challenges, helping me develop a well-rounded skill set that would prove invaluable in the years to come.

One of my career highlights was undoubtedly the opening of the Southampton Harbour Hotel in 2017. We achieved five-star status within months of opening, an experience that taught me the true power of energising and motivating a team towards a common goal. It reinforced my belief that success in hospitality is fundamentally about people - both guests and staff.

Throughout my journey, I’ve come to realise that effective leadership in hospitality requires a delicate balance of commercial acumen and genuine care for people. It’s about creating an environment where team members feel valued and motivated to deliver exceptional experiences for guests.

In my role as managing director at Luxury Family Hotels, I focused on implementing strategies that combined operational excellence with a people-first mentality. This approach not only drove guest satisfaction but also fostered a positive workplace culture that attracted and retained talent.

Looking ahead, I believe we’re on the cusp of significant technological advancements in hospitality. We’re likely to see innovations in web journeys, booking processes, check-ins, and ordering systems that will revolutionise the guest experience. As leaders, we must embrace these changes while ensuring that the human touch - the heart of hospitality - remains at the forefront of our operations.

My journey from pot wash to managing director has taught me that success in hospitality is not just about climbing the career ladder. It’s about continuous learning, adapting to change, and most importantly, inspiring others to reach their full potential.

As I co-founded Rockingham Partners, I’ve taken these lessons to heart, focusing on helping other hospitality businesses thrive through effective leadership and strategic guidance.

To those aspiring to leadership roles in hospitality, I offer this advice: embrace every opportunity to learn, stay passionate about delivering exceptional experiences, and never underestimate the power of a motivated team.

Remember, great leaders in hospitality don’t just manage operations - they inspire people, create memorable experiences, and drive positive change in the industry.

As we look to the future of hospitality, let’s continue to innovate, inspire, and lead with passion. After all, it’s not just about running successful businesses - it’s about creating environments where both guests and staff can thrive.
