The first battery energy storage system developed by south Derry firm Heron Bros has gone live in Banbridge.

The new energy subsidiary, set up by the well-known development and construction company last year, has already established itself as a key player in the emerging energy storage sector.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are becoming an increasingly common element in the grid amid the growth of solar and wind power, allowing electricity to be stored during periods of excess energy production.

Industry monitor Construction information Systems (CIS) Ireland has tracked 50 planning applications linked to BESS projects in the north since January 2023, including 25 in the first half of 2024.

Heron Energy has already secured planning approval for a handful of BESS projects, with 14 planning applications currently in the system.

“As Northern Ireland aims to generate 80% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, the necessity of battery energy storage solutions has never been greater,” said Heron Group managing director, Damien O’Callaghan.

“Achieving this target is crucial not only for addressing the climate crisis but also for enhancing our energy security through increased reliance on local electricity generation.

“As a local business dedicated to sustainability, we understand the urgency of expanding the Heron Energy growth goals.

“By doing so, we aim to both increase employment opportunities and contribute to solving the energy crisis.”
