HSBC’s last remaining branch in Northern Ireland is set to close for three weeks from today (October 11) to facilitate refurbishment work.

The lender said the branch on Belfast’s Royal Avenue will be fitted with new “state-of-the-art” cash machines, with new signage and paintwork also planned.

The branch upgrades are taking place despite the fact HSBC is planning to vacate the premises in the middle of next year.

The bank is due to relocate its Belfast branch to the former River Island unit on Donegall Place next summer.

It’s understood HSBC needs to upgrade its ATMs in the Royal Avenue branch because changes to its systems means the existing cash machines will no longer function in the near future.

The branch is expected to reopen on November 1.

Neil Roberts, HSBC UK’s local director, said: “We have been talking to customers about the temporary closure for the last month, and while we are having the work done people can continue to use their nearest Post Office for day-to-day transactions, plus mobile and online banking is available 24/7 in addition to being able to call our contact centre.

“We will also be hosting community pop-up events at the Clayton Hotel, 22-25 Ormeau Avenue, Belfast, where we will be on hand to support customers.

“We will be there Monday to Friday, from October 14 until October 31, 10am to 4pm.”
