For over 50 years, The Open University has helped some two million learners in total to open up their futures with courses that are valued by employers, aimed at career progression and offer students the flexibility to earn while they learn. This number includes over 50,000 students in Northern Ireland while an incredible 7,000 students here, are currently studying with The Open University.
Its mission is to make learning accessible to all. Applications for its range of Skill-Up funded postgraduate and microcredential courses, worth up to £3,360, are now open closing at 12 noon on September 12 2024. Spaces are limited so early application is recommended.
What can I study?
There are currently 17 postgraduate and 9 microcredential courses funded through the Department for the Economy’s Skill Up initiative. As the largest academic institution in the UK and a world leader in flexible supported learning, The Open University paves the way in developing courses that are tailor-made to meet current workforce needs, bridge the skills gap and contribute to broader economic and environmental goals.
Courses on offer focus on three specific areas: green skills, computing and IT, and leadership and management. These courses are offered at no cost and are designed to be accessible to a wide range of learners, supporting their professional and personal growth.
What’s involved?
Postgraduate courses provide skills and knowledge that can bring real-life benefits to you and your career. It is recommend that you set aside 16–18 hours to study these each week. To prepare for postgraduate course study, applicants are advised to complete the Succeeding in postgraduate study course on OpenLearn.
Microcredential courses are designed to help you quickly build in-demand career skills and knowledge to stay up to date with relevant and emerging practices, progress in growth industries, and get ahead. Who can apply for these funded courses?
To be eligible for a fully funded place you must be:
- domiciled in Northern Ireland
- eligible to work in Northern Ireland
- settled in Northern Ireland, and ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years or have indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK
- over 18 years of age
In addition, you must meet the individual entry requirements for your chosen course. Proof of address will be required if your application is successful.
How can I apply?
You are advised to read the guidance notes carefully before applying, and you must apply via the application form on the Skill-Up webpage
Only submit one application form. If you submit more than one application, The Open University will shortlist based on the information included in the first application. Therefore, please consider your module choice carefully before applying.
Applications must be received by 12 noon on September 12 2024. Should courses receive a high number of applications, the university reserves the right to close applications early. Relevant updates will appear on this page.
