Toals Bookmakers is adding another three shops to its growing portfolio following another major acquisition.

Toals has taken over shops in Kilrea, Maghera and Dungiven previously owned by the J Rainey Bookmakers business.

That takes the total number of shops run by the firm to more than 50, while Toals employs around 250 people.

Company owner Gary Toal told the Irish News: “We’re really well established and have a very recognised brand.

“All the Rainey shops will be rebranded and newly fitted out,” he added.

In what it says is a sign of confidence in the market, Toals has been investing heavily in digitalising their branches in the past few years to create a comfortable betting experience, accompanied by state-of-the-art technology.

Mr Toal said the company - which can trace its roots back to 1927 - would continue to grow over the coming years.

The family-run firm recently launched a text betting service to operate alongside its rapidly expanding telephone betting service.

Toals is now among the biggest bookmakers in the north, where the industry employs close to 2,000 people in 320 betting shops and contributes in excess of £1 billion to the economy each year.
