Dublin band Aslan are to continue performing with a new singer following the death of frontman Christy Dignam earlier this year, the remaining members have revealed.
The group announced their plans in a statement confirming they would not be taking part in a planned tribute gig next year in memory of Mr Dignam, who died in June aged 63.
The singer had been receiving palliative care at home before his death following six months of treatment in hospital for rare blood disorder amyloidosis.
In a statement posted to Instagram, the remaining band members, Alan Downey, Joe Jewell and Billy McGuinness said they would be returning to performing “having spent the last number of months grieving the loss of their dear friend and band mate”.
“The lads have decided to embark on a new chapter and to mark that there will be a new singer joining them,” the statement read.
“In no way are they a replacement for Christy as this is absolutely impossible, there will never be another Christy Dignam.”
The statement added: “Aslan will be back in 2024 and we know Christy would be proud to hear and see what’s to come. Joe Alan and Billy are so looking forward to seeing all their loyal fans again.”
The remaining band members conformed they would not be taking part in the Christy Dignam: A Celebration concert due to take place next May at Dublin’s Vicar Street venue.
The concert is due to see several Irish artists performing songs sung by the Aslan frontman during his career.
