A young schoolgirl seriously injured in a knife attack in Dublin has been readmitted to intensive care due to complications in her recovery.

In November, the 5-year-old was one of three children injured in the attack outside Coláiste Mhuire on Parnell Square.

She suffered critical injuries and was treated in the ICU at Temple Street Children’s Hospital while two other injured children were discharged that same month.

Before Christmas, the girl had improved enough to be moved out of intensive care to a general ward.

In an update yesterday on a GoFundMe campaign supporting her medical care, organisers revealed she has suffered a setback.

“We had a bit of a setback and are currently in the ICU once more,” the post announced.

“Bumps in the road, particularly this long one, are to be expected. Nevertheless we are still positive and hoping to get back on the ward. Fingers crossed.” it added.

The fundraiser is now called Barróg do Chailín Beag, which means “A Hug for a Little Girl,” instead of the original title, “Róisín Fundraiser.”

Before Christmas, the carer who was stabbed outside the gaelscoil where the incident occurred in November was discharged.

The GoFundMe campaign, has raised over €76,000 to aid the little girl’s care.

The November attacks sparked a night of riots across central Dublin involving vandalism, looting, car burnings and attacks on Gardaí.

Caio Benicio (43), was one of the heroes who arrived on the scene to assist the victims of the knife attack on the children and care worker. He has since returned to his home country Brazil.

His bravery won him praise, and a GoFundMe campaign encouraging people to “buy Caio a pint” brought in €370,000. As recently as six days ago, donations were still being made.

In the aftermath, gardaí pledged an increased visible presence downtown to prevent further unrest.

Riad Bouchaker, has since been charged with possession and production of a weapon in relation to the attack and will face trial.
