Irish man found dead in police cell in Portugal

Man had been arrested over alleged assault involving partner

A 69-year-old man has drowned in the sea in the popular Algarve resort of Albufeira.
A Co Donegal man has been found dead in a police cell in the Portuguese resort of Albufeira.

A 29-year-old man from Letterkenny has been found dead in a police cell in Albufeira, Portugal.

It is understood the man was arrested in the Albufeira area on Tuesday evening following an alleged assault on his 29-year-old partner at the popular resort in Portugal’s Algarve region.

The woman was reportedly treated for stab wounds, but has since been released from hospital.

The man was reported to have been found dead in his cell on Wednesday morning.

It is understood foul play is not suspected.

The circumstances of the death are being investigated by the Portugal’s Judicial Police and the Inspection-General of Internal Administration (IGAI).



A spokesperson for the Republic’s Department of Foreign Affairs said it is “aware of the case and is providing consular assistance”.

“As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the detail of individual cases,” they added.
