‘So much promise and personality’: Tributes to Irish girl Clodagh Phelan after balcony death in Spain

The Co Wicklow girl had been on holiday with her family when she fell from her hotel room on Monday morning

Taoiseach Simon Harris has led tributes to a Co Wicklow girl who tragically died after falling from a hotel balcony in Spain on Monday.

Clodagh Phelan (11) had been on holiday with her parents and two brothers in Puerto de Alcudia in Majorca and had been due to return to Ireland.

It was reported she fell around 6.30am on Monday from a seventh-floor balcony of a hotel in the Club Mac resort.

Emergency services had rushed to help her but she died at the scene.

The Spanish Civil Guard has since confirmed she fell from the balcony and that they are treating the death as an accident.

Mr Harris commented: “So sad to hear of the tragic loss of Clodagh Phelan. So much promise and personality snatched away in a terrible accident.

“Thoughts with her family and community at this truly awful time.”



A juvenile member of Parnell AC in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow, a statement from the club said they were “truly heartbroken” by the loss of “a beautiful, spirited child who excelled in many sports.”

Rathdrum Rugby Club added that members were “stunned by the tragic passing of our little star Clodagh Phelan.”

Sharing their condolences with the family, they said as well as being “a rare talent” on the field, she was “a fantastic little person with a massive heart and infectious personality.”

In April this year, there was a proud moment for her family and club when she had played with her team during a half time exhibition match during and Ireland Womens’ Six Nations international at Musgrave Park, where she was selected as Player of the Match.

Avondale GAA club wrote of the “utter heartbreak” felt at the sudden loss.

They said: “A beautiful young girl who was full of the joys of life, a girl who excelled on the sporting fields of Camogie, football, athletics and rugby has being taken from us way too soon.”
