Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon councillors have agreed to provide financial support to clubs hosting events for Armagh’s All-Ireland final showdown this Sunday - but will not be providing fan zones for supporters who can’t make it to Croke Park.

The idea of council-run fan zones had been mooted in the weeks leading up to the Orchardmen’s showdown with Galway, but instead the council has opted to provide funding of around £25,000 to community run events.

It’s also understood calls for a fan zone to be set up at the Athletic Grounds, county ground of Armagh GAA, for Sunday’s game have not come to fruition.

Homecoming events are being organised by Armagh GAA in the hours and days following Sunday’s final, which sees Kieran McGeeney’s side’s first appearance in a final since 2003.

It’s understood the council’s plans were agreed by elected members during a full council meeting on Monday evening, in a behind closed doors debate and vote.

A spokesperson for the council said it could not comment due to the item having been discussed in confidential business in Monday’s meeting.

Sinn Féin and SDLP councillors Catherine Nelson and Thomas O’Hanlon said they welcomed support ‘from across the political spectrum’ for the request for financial support.

“Armagh reaching the All-Ireland final for the first time since 2003 is a huge achievement and the excitement can be felt throughout the county, it’s only right that the Council plays their part in the celebrations and homecoming events,” the joint statement said.

“The council have been actively engaged with the County Board around its planning for a homecoming event and we know all logistical, practical and professional support is very much appreciated by all concerned.

“For communities and clubs organising fan zones or on the day events, support through the provision of toilets, barriers etc is all being made available so just get in touch if your community or club need to avail of this.

“Finally, a financial assistance package has been agreed for sports clubs to host events to celebrate the team’s achievements and the details of this will be advertised in due course.

“This is a memorable occasion for the entire county. We wish Geezer, (Armagh manager McGeeney) Aidan Forker and all the team the very best and look forward to welcoming them and Sam Maguire home to Armagh next week.”
