Alliance has selected Andrew McMurray as its new MLA for south Down following the resignation of Patrick Brown.

Mr McMurray, a councillor for Newry, Mourne and Down district, was selected by local members at a meeting at the weekend.

An outdoor instructor and youth worker, Mr McMurray has served as a councillor since 2016.

“It is an honour and a privilege to become the MLA for south Down and I fully intend on approaching the role with 100% of my ability and enthusiasm, to continue providing local people with the representation they need and deserve,” he said.

Last week Mr Brown said he was stepping down with immediate effect for “personal reasons”.

It later emerged he was facing a probe by Stormont’s standards commissioner over a complaint regarding his conduct towards an integrated school in his constituency.

Mr Brown said the investigation had “no bearing” on his decision to resign.
