A driver who ‘crashed a silver Mercedes’ in east Belfast after being pursued by police has been arrested.

Police had responded to reports of a vehicle driving “erratically” in the Belmont Road area, when the Mercedes driver allegedly failed to stop for officers.

After a short pursuit along Hawthornden Way, the car hit the crash barrier at a pedestrian crossing at the Knock junction.

The male driver was then arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

A police spokesperson said: “It is never ok to get behind the wheel of a car when you are under the influence of drink or illicit drugs. In this instance it was lucky that no persons were injured and no other vehicles were involved.”
