A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was allegedly attacked with a sword in Co Down.

Police attended the scene at a house in Ballaghbeg Park in Newcastle in the early hours of Sunday morning where they said victim had sustained facial injuries and a ‘severe arm injury’. He was reportedly hit repeatedly on the head with an object.

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, and possessing article with blade or point in public place.

A police spokesman said: “He remains in police custody at this time, assisting with enquiries.

“Our investigation is ongoing, and we are appealing to anyone who may have any information which might assist, or who witnessed what happened, to get in touch.”

SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath has urged anyone with information to contact the PSNI.

Mr McGrath said: “The fact that someone had access to a sword and then used it for an assault is worrying and unacceptable. I hope that the person injured recovers quickly.

“I would ask anyone with any information about the incident to contact the police. Such information is critical to ensure such an incident doesn’t occur again. Newcastle is a peaceful and tourist-driven area and this behaviour is unacceptable and not reflective of the community here.”
