A 41-year-old man questioned by police on suspicion of attempted murder in Co Down has been released on bail.
The arrest was made following a report of an assault in the Fort Road area of Bangor on Friday night.
A man in his 40s was found lying unconscious on the road with a significant head injury.
A PSNI spokesperson said: ”Initial medical treatment was provided at the scene and the victim was transported to hospital for treatment to his injuries where he remains in a serious condition”.
Police said a 41-year-old man was arrested a short time later and questioned on suspicion of attempted murder and a number of other related offences including, possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.
He was later released on police bail “to allow for further enquiries”.
Police have appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them.
