The hit BBC show Blue Lights has won a prestigious award for ‘best drama series’ at a ceremony in London, as production for the latest season continues in Belfast.

The critically acclaimed police drama up the prize at the Broadcast Awards on Wednesday night.

It faced strong competition in the category from the likes of Netflix’s streaming sensation ‘Baby Reindeer’ and ITV’s ‘Mr Bates vs The Post Office’.

However, a panel of industry experts decided to award the prize to the Belfast-based show.

Blue Lights creator and writer, Dan Lawn, took to social media to share his excitement following the “incredible” news.

“Wow! Blue Lights series two just won best drama at the Broadcast Awards in London,” he said.

“I’m totally blown away, especially given the competition.”

The former BBC Panorama journalist, who serves as an executive producer alongside fellow creator Adam Patterson, added that he was “tucked up in bed in Belfast” as production for season three continues in the city.

Blue Lights has enjoyed both critical acclaim and high viewing figures since debuting on screen in 2023, with an average of more than four million viewers tuning into each episode.

The BBC has commissioned two more seasons of the programme, which follows three PSNI officers tackling paramilitary-linked crime gangs.

The latest season is expected to air later this year.
