Police have warned people to avoid the area of Rivenwood where the suspected bomb was found, though no roads are closed

Police have cordoned off part of the Rivenwood area of Newtownards after a suspected piece of historic munition was found.
Part of the Rivenwood area of Newtownards has been cordoned off now for more than 24 hours after a suspected piece of historic munition was found.

Bomb disposal officers remain at the scene where an unexploded munition believed to date from World War Two was discovered.

The suspected bomb was found during construction work at a new build development in the Rivenwood area of Newtownards.

No roads are closed and no houses were evacuated as those closest are under construction and unoccupied. Ammunition Technical Officers have been on the scene since the alarm was raised on Friday morning.

On Saturday, Superintendent Johnston McDowell said: “We are continuing this morning to ask members of the public to avoid the area where possible.

“I appreciate this may cause some disruption, however keeping people safe is paramount and we will not take any risks. I want to thank those who may be affected for their patience at this time.

“Updates will be provided in due course as the incident develops.”
