Gardaí on Tuesday launched a murder investigation after a woman’s body was found in a field in Co Roscommon.
Mirjana Pap, who was 58 and originally from Croatia, was reported missing in the early hours of Saturday from her home in Athlone, Co Westmeath.
Cars were seized and a property in Athlone by gardai investigating the death.
Following the discovery of the woman’s body on Monday at Curraghaleen, gardaí said the missing person appeal for Ms Pap “has been stood down”.
Two cars were seized while a house in Athlone was searched as an investigation was launched into the circumstances of the woman’s death.
Ms Pap was described as a “beloved member” of the Athlone community in a GoFundMe post requesting donations to support the family in covering funeral expenses and honouring her memory.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Garda said it is “investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in her 50s following the discovery of a body on lands at Curraghaleen, Co Roscommon (near Athlone) on Monday afternoon, December 30 2024.”
“The local coroner has been notified and the woman’s body has been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway for a post-mortem examination by the Deputy State Pathologist,” the statement continued.
“A senior investigating officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Athlone Garda Station. A family liaison officer (FLO) has also been assigned to provide support to the family.
“Examinations are currently underway at the scene and at a residential property in Athlone by the Garda Technical Bureau. Two cars have also been seized for examination.”
