Child taken to hospital following fire at home in south Antrim

Four fire appliances sent to scene of accidental blaze after alarm raised shortly before 2pm on Friday

A child was taken to hospital following a fire on Friday afternoon in Newtownabbey.

The fire, believed to be accidental, broke out shortly before 1.40pm at the property on Veryan Gardens.

Two people were in the house at the time, including the child, who was transferred by ambulance to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

Two appliances from Whitla Station, one from Westland and a fourth from Knock were sent to the scene of the blaze, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said.

“Firefighters were called to reports of a terraced house on fire in Veryan Gardens, Belfast,” .a NIFRS spokesperson said.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire and two casualties were transferred to the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

“The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental ignition and the incident was dealt with by 4.09pm.”

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said a 999 call was received at 1:37pm



“NIAS despatched one Emergency Ambulance crew and one Rapid Response Paramedic to the incident,” a spokesperson said.

“The Charity Air Ambulance with HEMS on board was also tasked to attend.

“Following initial assessment and treatment at scene, one patient was taken to Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children by ambulance.”
