A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a sword attack at a house in Co Down in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The victim sustained a “severe arm injury” following the attack in Ballaghberg Park, along with cuts to his face, and was also repeatedly struck in the head with an object.

Police questioned a man in his 30s on suspicion of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, and possessing article with blade or point in public place.

“He remains in police custody at this time, assisting with enquiries,” a PSNI spokesperson said.

“Our investigation is ongoing, and we are appealing to anyone who may have any information which might assist, or who witnessed what happened, to get in touch.”

SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath said the “fact that someone had access to a sword and then used it for an assault is worrying and unacceptable”.

“I hope that the person injured recovers quickly. I would ask anyone with any information about the incident to contact the police. Such information is critical to ensure such an incident doesn’t occur again,” Mr McGrath added.

“Newcastle is a peaceful and tourist-driven area and this behaviour is unacceptable and not reflective of the community here.”

South Down Alliance MLA Andrew McMurray condemned the attack, describing the behaviour of the attacker “completely unacceptable”.

Mr McMurray said: “This is a truly horrific incident and the individual responsible must be held accountable for their actions. My thoughts are with the victim of the attack, who I wish a speedy and full recovery.

“It is concerning that someone had access to such a lethal weapon. This behaviour is completely unacceptable and there is absolutely no place for it within our community.

“Newcastle is a peaceful and welcoming town, and this incident does not reflect the values of those living there.”
