Martin McCauley of the so-called Colombia Three is expected to appear in court in the north on Thursday after handing himself over to Gardaí in Co Kildare.

A Dublin court ordered the Co Armagh native’s extradition earlier this month after a decision to prosecute him for murder was taken by the Public Prosecution Service last year.

It is understood the 62-year-old opted not to appeal his pending extradition and presented himself to Gardaí by arrangement in Naas on Thursday morning.

He is due to appear at Craigavon Magistrates Court court later today.

Mr McCauley, who now lives in Co Kildare, is wanted in connection with an explosion that claimed the lives of RUC members Sean Quinn, Allan McCloy and Paul Hamilton at Kinnego Embankment, near Lurgan, in October 1982.

The three police officers were travelling along a country road in an unmarked car when a 1,000lb bomb was detonated by remote control.

A former Sinn Féin election worker, Mr McCauley has had the support of the republican party in the past.

Mr McCauley believes his extradition is part of a plot by British authorities for his “onward extradition” to Colombia.

In 2001 the 61-year-old was arrested along with Niall Connolly and James Monaghan in Colombia and accused of training FARC guerrilla forces for the Provisiona IRA.

The trio were initially cleared of the charge, however, they were later convicted on appeal and sentenced to 17 years in jail.

They avoided a return to prison after fleeing Colombia, resurfacing in Ireland a year later.

Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace had granted an amnesty to the three in April 2000, however, this was revoked last May, which is being appealed.

In 1982 Mr McCauley was with Michael Tighe (17) when he was shot dead by the RUC in a suspected shoot to kill operation in Co Armagh.

A conviction for possession of three rifles was quashed in 2014 after it emerged that MI5 had bugged the hayshed where the shooting took place but the recordings were not made available at Mr McCauley’s trial.

A spokesman for the PSNI’s International Policing Unit said: “The Police Service of Northern Ireland has been liaising closely with An Garda Siochana and today’s arrest demonstrates the benefits of joint working between police forces and other national partner agencies.

“In this particular case, we worked closely with the (PSNI’s) Legacy Investigation Branch and An Garda Siochana to locate this male and bring him before the courts.”
