Colleagues of a postman left critically injured after being struck on his rounds by a cyclist have told of their shock at the incident, as he remains in an induced coma.

Popular Royal Mail worker Michael Logan from Craigavon was injured in the Newton Park area of Belfast on Saturday August 17. Mr Logan was on foot when the collision occurred.

A fundraiser has been launched to help support Mr Logan’s family as he remains in hospital.

He has been in an induced coma at the Intensive Care Unit of Royal Victoria Hospital for the past three weeks.

Mr Logan, who is in his forties, has been described as a “valued colleague, friend, husband and father”.

Brendan Mullan said his colleague of 20 years was well known for his great sense of humour, passion for martial arts and keeping fit, support of AC Milan and interest in current affairs.

“When the other postmen who had seen the accident came back to the depot and told us how serious it was, we could see the fear on their faces. They described the scene and it sounded horrific,” he said.

“Everybody at work is wishing Michael well and thinking of his family at this time.

“All the postmen in Michael’s area, Belfast South and Central, have also made donations to his fundraiser.”

Colin Price, another colleague, has set up an online fundraiser to support his family at this “difficult and emotional time”.

According to Mr Price, the aim of the JustGiving page is to help Mr Logan’s wife and two young daughters with the expenses of travelling to RVH every day to be at his bedside.

Mr Price said: “Every penny raised will go directly to the family, to help them with the added cost of travelling to and from hospital to support Michael in his recovery. It is at times like this that the Royal Mail family and community truly pulls together in unity.

“I would encourage people to please donate whatever they can to support this valued colleague, friend, husband and father at this difficult and emotional time.”

The community in the greater Four Winds area, where Mr Logan was well known, is also throwing its weight behind the Royal Mail fundraising effort.

Belfast Shaftesbury Bowls Club is hosting a Summer of Love live music event on September 28.

In addition, Lisburn and Castlereagh SDLP councillor John Gallen has appealed to the residents in Mr Logan’s delivery area to give donations to their postman or at the Newton Park Mace.

The Rowland Hill Fund, a charity for all postal people facing situations such as life-changing health challenges, will also be supporting Mr Logan’s family.

The PSNI is continuing to appeal for information about the collision.

A spokesperson told The Irish News: “The pedestrian remains in a critical condition in hospital at this time following the collision.

“Meanwhile the cyclist, a man aged in his thirties, has since been discharged from hospital and continues to recover at home from his injuries.

“We would reiterate our appeal to anyone with information about what happened, or who has dash-cam or other footage to contact us.”
