A controlled explosion has been carried out on a suspected “old wartime munition” in the Mournes area of Co Down.

The object was found on land in the rural Banns Road area, close to the village of Attical, shortly before 1pm on Monday afternoon.

A PSNI spokesperson said the object “is thought to be an old wartime munition” and said no roads were closed as a result of the operation.

They later added: “Officers attended alongside ATO (ammunition technical officers) who carried out a controlled explosion.”

The incident follows two security alerts in the Mournes area last year caused by devices dating back to World War 2.

In January 2023, an artillery shell was made safe after it was discovered in the Leitrim Road area of Kilkeel, while two months later, a “viable” WW2 mortar was found and destroyed in a controlled explosion in the Trassey Road area west of Newcastle.
