Hardline republicans are planning to hold an Easter parade in Derry which has previously ended in violence.

The ‘Unfinished Revolution National Easter Commemoration’ event will take place on Easter Monday, which falls on April 21.

The parade is being organised by the National Republican Commemoration Committee (NRCC), which arranges events on behalf of anti-agreement party Saoradh.

A similar NRCC event in 2022 was led by a masked colour party and included men and women dressed in combat gear, as it made its way from Free Derry Corner to the City Cemetery.

Trouble later flared when a group of youths hurled petrol bombs at PSNI Land Rovers while several people were arrested.

Organisers say the 2025 parade will start at Creggan Shops before making its way to a local republican memorial site, Séadchomhartha Na Ndaoine - The People’s Monument – which is located at Free Derry Corner.

It has not been confirmed if the April parade will be notified to the Parades Commission.

The NRCC event is due to take place on the same day a parade organised by the Derry 1916 Commemoration Committee is normally held.

During similar events in recent years PSNI vehicles were attacked by young people throwing petrol bombs.

Serious trouble was avoided this year when police stayed out of the Creggan area and instead monitored the parade from the air using a helicopter and a drone.

The NRCC parade organisers have has invited “all revolutionary socialist republicans committed to the continuing fight for Irish Freedom to join with us to commemorate our martyred dead in a dignified, honourable and appropriate way”.

SDLP MLA and Policing Board member Mark H Durkan urged organisers to obtain permission for the parade.

“Hopefully they seek and obtain the relevant permissions and can proceed with a respectful and lawful commemoration that doesn’t require police intervention and result in disruption and destruction in Creggan and Bogside,” he said.
