A 60-year-old man, who was ‘unlawfully at large’ from prison in Northern Ireland relating to a murder conviction from 1990, has been arrested in Dublin following a PSNI extradition warrant.

Newry man Thomas McCabe was arrested by Gardaí in the Dublin area on Saturday, August 10.

The PSNI had said that he failed to return to prison from day release in August of last year.

McCabe received a life sentence for killing a teenager in London in 1990 and was previously on the run for more than two years before being arrested by Gardaí in 2020.

He has been remanded to prison pending extradition proceedings after appearing before the Extradition Court in Dublin on Sunday morning.

“We continue to work with closely with An Garda Síochána to locate and arrest persons sought for extradition,” a spokesperson from the PSNI’s International Policing Unit said.

They added that they “appreciate the continued assistance of An Garda Síochána” in “tracking down those who abscond from the justice system here in Northern Ireland”.
