A couple have claimed they found bed bugs in their bedroom at the Premier Inn hotel on Alfred Street in Belfast.
Flora Golledge said she and her husband discovered the insects after checking into the hotel late last Friday night.
Ms Golledge and her husband, Robert, had booked to spend three nights in the Belfast hotel to celebrate a friend’s birthday but checked out on the first night.
Premier Inn said “routine checks” had been carried out the day before the couple arrived and there was “no evidence” of bed bugs.
A spokesperson said: “We are confident that there are no bed bugs at this hotel.
“We have rigorous processes in place to both prevent and to react to any issues with bed bugs for any rare occasion this is brought to our attention.”
The hotel franchise said it sent in independent specialists the day before the alleged incident as part of “routine checks”.
“Absolutely no evidence of bed bugs [were] identified by the experts and nor did our team see any evidence,” the spokesperson added.
Ms Golledge said she and her husband have been in contact with Tourism NI and Belfast City Council’s environmental health department.
Belfast City Council has said it is “engaging” with the hotel: “Council has received a call in recent days regarding bedbugs. We are engaging with the business and providing advice.”
Tourism NI confirmed it had received a complaint.
“Tourism NI is taking steps to investigate the matter further and has also referred it to the Environmental Health Department at Belfast City Council,” it said.
“Tourism NI has acknowledged receipt of the complaint and will provide the complainant with further details of our investigation, once concluded.”
Ms Golledge said the Premier Inn agreed to refund the Saturday and Sunday night stay but not the first night.
