A husband and wife have suffered injuries following a suspected attack during a burglary in Derry.

The alarm was raised on the incident in the Spencer Road area of the city shortly before midnight on Sunday when a man contacted police to say he had been approached by a distressed woman.

The woman, who had a facial injury, told him men had entered her home and were trying to attack her husband.

Police officers attended the property and found a man in his 40s with head, leg and hand injuries, and substantial damage caused to the front door.

A PSNI spokesperson said two suspects aged 34 and 39 were later arrested in the Duke Street area on suspicion of aggravated burglary and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Both remained in custody on Monday.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who may be able to assist with our investigation, or who have may have been in the Spencer Road/Duke Street area around midnight to contact us on 101, quoting reference 1838 of 11/08/24,” the spokesperson added.
