Derry hiking accident victim was a father-of-two

The funeral will take place on Thursday of Derry father-of-two, Brian Campbell, who died in an accident while hiking in Co Donegal.

Mr Campbell, who was in his 50s, suffered fatal injuries while he was hiking with a friend at the Poison Glen, Dunlewey on Saturday.

His friend, who was also in his 50s, and was also injured was treated at Letterkenny University Hospital although his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A spokesman for Donegal Mountain Rescue (DMR) said their teams were alerted around 1.25pm on Saturday afternoon.

The spokesman said: “It was then established there had been a catastrophic event involving two climbers, one of whom had passed away.

“The Rescue 118 helicopter was also tasked to extract and airlift the casualty to Letterkenny University Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The team then carried out a complex recovery of the body of the man who passed away. They were stood down just before 11pm that night.”

On behalf of DMR, the spokesman extended condolence to the family and friends of the deceased.



Mr Campbell’s wake commenced at his home, at Woodbrook West, in Derry on Tuesday. His funeral will take place from his home to St Mary’s Church, Creggan on Thursday for Requiem Mass (11am) with interment afterwards at Derry City Cemetery.

Sympathies have been extended to Mr Campbell’s wife and family by SDLP assembly member, Mark H Durkan and former Sinn Féin mayor of Derry, Sandra Duffy among others.
