A small picturesque cove in south west Donegal has been named the top beach along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

Silver Strand at Malin Beg near Glencolmcille came out top on a social media survey, beating Enniscrone Beach in Co Sligo, Dog’s Bay in Galway and Inch Beach in County Kerry.

The Wild Atlantic Way is a hugely successful tourism trail along Ireland’s west coast stretching from Malin Head in Donegal to Kinsale in Co Cork.

Deep in the south west Donegal Gaeltacht, Silver Strand lies at the head of an almost perfect crescent-shaped cove just outside the village of Malin Beg. The area is popular with tourists, Irish language enthusiasts and, in particular, Irish traditional musicians.

Silver Strand was brought to a much wider audience in recent years with the release of “In the Land of Saints and Sinners”, a film starring Liam Neeson.

The Netflix movie, which also starred Jack Gleeson, Niamh Cusack, Colm Meaney and Ciaran Hinds, was filmed in the rugged countryside around Glencolmcille and Malinbeg.

Taken star, Neeson said the south west Donegal scenery added a lot to In the Land of Saints and Sinners.

“Going to work was an absolute joy,” the Ballymena-born Hollywood star said.
