A motorist was caught driving more than 30mph over the speed limit in Co Down at the weekend, police said.

PSNI Road Policing and Safety officers said they recorded a driver at a speed of 105mph on the M1 near Moira Saturday 21 September,

Motorways in the North have a speed limit of up to 70mph.

A PSNI Road Policing and safety spokesperson said: “Roads Policing Unit Officers based out of Mahon Road have detected a vehicle on the M1 near Moira at a whopping speed of 105mph.

“This driver who has been driving little over a year will now have a day in Court and faces possible disqualification.”

Excess speed was a contributory reason in one in seven of all fatal collisions in Northern Ireland in 2023.

In 2023 there were 66 fatal collisions resulting in 71 fatalities. Of those 66 collisions, ten listed excessive speed as a reason in the collision, five listed excessive speed as the principal causation reason and five further collisions had excessive speed listed as a contributory reason.
