Driver of car in M1 ‘hit and run’ among number of road arrests

Police said Sprucefield Road Interceptors made four arrests on Thursday night

The driver of a vehicle involved in an alleged hit and run on the M1 was among a number of arrests made by road police on Thursday night.

Road policing interceptors from Sprucefield stopped the vehicle in the Oldpark area of north Belfast after observing it had ‘heavy frontal damage’.

“The vehicle was stopped and further enquiries showed that the vehicle had been involved in a hit-and-run collision on the M1 Motorway,” police said in a statement posted online.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested on ‘suspicion of driving with excess alcohol and other motoring offences’ after allegedly failing a roadside preliminary breath test.

In another incident in south Belfast, road policing officers stopped a car in the Malone Road area on Thursday evening after it had been reported as being involved in ‘a large retail theft from a retail premises in Newtownabbey.

“Both occupants were arrested on suspicion of theft,” police said.

“The passenger was also arrested for possession of a Class A controlled drug after a small bag of white power was located during a search.”

“Both are currently assisting police with their enquiries.”

Elsewhere, a driver was also arrested in Banbridge after a vehicle which was reported stolen in the Republic was stopped by officers.

The driver, who police say is ‘currently disqualified’ was arrested and charged to court for driving whilst disqualified, driving with no insurance and handling stolen goods.
