Two people dead after helicopter crashes into building in Westmeath

The incident happened near the Killucan area at around 3.30pm on Tuesday

Two people died after a helicopter crashed into a building in Co Westmeath.

The two males, one an Irish national in his 40s, the other understood to be from eastern Europe, were declared at the scene of the crash, which happened in the Killucan area around 3.30pm on Tuesday.

Gardai are liaising with the family of the Irishman while attempts were being made to make contact with the next of kin of the second male, also aged in his 40s. Interpol assistance may be required.

Both bodies have been removed from the scene to Regional Hospital Mullingar where post mortems will be carried, while the local Coroner has been notified.

Westmeath Fire and Rescue Service and the National Ambulance Service were on the scene for several hours in the aftermath of the crash.

The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) will investigate the accident and the scene will remained preserved as the probe continued.

“An Garda Síochána will assist the AAIU by providing any technical and/or forensic services which may be required in the course of their investigation,” a spokesperson said. .

The AAIU is deploying a team of inspectors at this time. Further updates will be provided when available,” the statement said.

Local residents told RTÉ the crash happened at a local piggery between Killucan and Raharney off the R156, with the aircraft seen “’plummeting suddenly’'.
