The family of a Co Tyrone businessman who died in Spain on new year’s day have spoken of their shock and sadness.
Brian Earley (63), who was originally from Castlederg, lost his life after falling on a set of steps at a Malaga hotel, shortly after celebrating the new year with family and friends.
The Co Tyrone man, who relocated to the Bay Area of California in 1999, went on to set up his own successful business, Emerald Steel Inc, which employs around 50 people in the US state.
But the avid horseracing fan retained strong links to his hometown and his family.
Speaking to The Irish News, his brother Charlie Earley, who travelled to Malaga during the week, said the family were working with the Kevin Bell Trust in the hope of repatriating his remains early next week.
He said his brother was known for his generosity and love for his family.
“It’s an awful shock,” he said. “He came home and spent Christmas here with us and then went out to Malaga.”
Mr Earley is also survived by his sisters Maureen, Vera, Delma and Kate.
In a short tribute, the family described him as: “The best brother anyone could wish for. His nieces and nephews adored him.
“He was the heartbeat of the family. It was a highlight for everyone when he arrived back in Castlederg.
“He lit up the place and was one of a kind.”
Mr Earley was also an avid GAA fan and in 2022 eagerly signed up to become the main sponsor of the Tyrone Masters team for three years.
Joe Leonard, manager of Tyrone Masters and President of the Gaelic Masters Association, said the Castlederg native was well known for his generosity and support for charities.
“Brian was always mad about football. I remember it was one Christmas Eve he came to me and asked if he could sponsor Tyrone Masters.”
Mr Leonard, who has managed Tyrone Masters to three all-Ireland titles in a row, said his team intend wearing the Emerald Steel jerseys in 2024 as a tribute to Brian Earley’s support.
“Brian said he wanted to sponsor us for three years, so we’ll keep to his wishes,” said the Castlederg clubman.
