The funeral of the young man who died in a lake tragedy in Co Tyrone is due to take place on Thursday.

Family and friends of Fiachra Ó Faoláin are expected to come together to say their final farewells at St Joseph’s Church, Caledon.

The body of the 21-year-old, who was from the Brantry area, was recovered from a lake in the Carricklongfield Road area of Aughnacloy on Sunday.

Emergency services, including police, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and Community Search and Rescue volunteers, attended the scene after the alarm was raised late on Saturday night.

Police said enquiries were being carried out “into the circumstances surrounding the death” but that it was “not believed to be suspicious”.

A funeral notice said he was the beloved son of Shane and Fiona (née Gildernew) and brother of Roisín, Méabh, his twin Dearbhla, Dáithí and Dualtách.

He was also a nephew of Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Colm Gildernew and former Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew.

Tributes have described him as a “much loved, loving and caring young man”.

In a statement released on behalf of the family, Mr Gildernew said his nephew had “a bright future ahead of him and he will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him”.

Mr Ó Faoláin worked for PM Engineering Limited, which described him as a “young talented engineer”.

In a statement, the Co Tyrone-based company said he was “involved in many elements of the business and worked on all types of engineering projects”.

“From welding many different types of steel structures, to fitting out final assemblies in the workshop and even out on site with the installation crews to many different parts of the country,” it said.

“Fiachra had no problem taking on anything that he was tasked to do.

“Fiachra was a great character about the workplace and his wit and laughter will be greatly missed, that’s for sure.

“A very likeable lad, who had time for everyone about the place, no matter who they were.”

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we learn of the death of our young colleague and friend, Fiachra Ó...
