An Oscar-winning short comedy film set in Northern Ireland is being celebrated by a colourful new mural in Belfast city centre.

The finishing touches are being put on a massive artwork depicting the stars of An Irish Goodbye.

The multi-award-winning short tells the story of two brothers from a farm in Co Tyrone.

Starring Belfast actor James Martin and Ballymena’s Seamus O’Hara as feuding brothers carrying out their late mother’s last wishes with her ashes, the film also features west Belfast’s Paddy Jenkins and the voice of Game of Thrones star Michelle Fairley.

It was filmed on location in Co Down by east Belfast’s Ross White along with his English co-director Tom Berkeley.

The film premiered in 2022; and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film, the BAFTA for Best Short Film and the Live Action Short Film category at the Irish Film and Television Awards.

During an acceptance speech at the Oscars last year, Hollywood A-listers joined in a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ for star James Martin, who was celebrating his 31st birthday.

The artwork, which was approved by Belfast City Council last year, is located on Winetavern Street in the Smithfield area.

An official opening to be held at a later date is expected to attract many of those who contributed to the film’s success.
