Fire crews battle for close to three hours fighting large blaze at Co Antrim metal recycling facility

Fire crews battled for hours fighting a large blaze at a metal recycling facility in Co Antrim.

Five fire appliances, one aerial and a control support unit attended the blaze on the Trench Road in Mallusk on Tuesday.

Large plumes of black smoke could be seen in the area after the fire is believed to have started at around 2pm.

The fire was dealt with by shortly before 5pm, with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) thanking the “public for their patience whilst firefighting operations took place”.

It is understood machinery was on fire at the metal recycling site.

The (NIFRS) earlier in the day said in a post on social media: “NIFRS is currently at the scene of a fire on Trench Road, Mallusk, Glengormley.

“The initial call was received at 2.05pm today (Tuesday 30 July 2024).

Police closed roads in the area.
