Five men released on bail after brawl involving axe and slash hook at Sunday Mass in Co Donegal

A court heard the argument escalated at a church in Letterkenny, where those involved had weapons ranging from an axe to a slash hook

A total of five men have been released on bail in Co Donegal after an argument at a Sunday Mass got out of control.

A heavy police presence was reported outside Letterkenny District Court on Monday, where the men were charged with offences including threatening and abusive behaviour and possession of offensive weapons.

From two families, the incident took place at the Church of the Irish Martyrs in Letterkenny.

As an argument broke out in the church porch, the parishioners had been asked to stay inside the building for their safety.

BBC NI reported that the court was told the argument then escalated into the car park.

Michael McDonagh (34) of the Big Isle in Letterkenny was charged with threatening and abusive behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

Gardai did not object to his bail, but asked for conditions that he sign on at Letterkenny Garda Station three times a week, does not contact any of the other parties involved and can be of good behaviour.

His case has been adjourned until September 16.

Bail for the other four accused, a father and three of his sons.

Michael Reilly Junior (31) of Kishogue Park in Lucan, Dublin, was also charged with threatening and abusive behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

He is also accused of possessing a small axe and two sharp kitchen knives.

Michael Reilly Senior (56) of Tailteann Drive, Windtown, in Navan, Co Meath, also faced charges of threatening and abusive behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

He was also accused of possessing a slash-hook with intention to cause injury or intimidate.

Thomas Reilly (21), who is also from Tailteann Drive in Windtown, faced similar charges as well as for havinga foldable garden saw with intention to cause injury or intimidate.

John Paul Reilly (29) of Tailteann Drive, had the same charges as Thomas Reilly.

The four men were released on bail until September 16 and told to sign on three times a week at their local Garda station.

They must also tay out of Co Donegal, except for court appearances, and from having any contact with the McDonagh family.
