A Union flag and a Northern Ireland flag were erected outside the entrance to pitches used by East Belfast GAA and an integrated primary school during a camogie training session last week.

It is understood three men arrived at the Henry Jones playing fields on the Church Road in the Castlereagh area on Thursday and erected a British flag on a pole while the session was taking place.

A Northern Ireland flag was also placed on the same stretch of road between the playing fields and a nearby integrated primary school.

The erection of the flags comes after an Orange Order flag was placed outside Loughview Integrated Primary school last year.

The Belfast City Council run pitches have been subject to a number of security alerts and sectarian hate incidents in recent years since the newly formed club began training and playing matches at the site.

Last month, a security alert at the East Belfast pitches saw a children’s training session halted due to an “elaborate hoax”.

The fledgling club was formed in 2020 and now boasts one of the largest playing memberships across the GAA in Ulster.
