The funeral of a man killed in a crash in Co Antrim is to take place on Thursday.

Michael Scally (34), from the Ballycastle area, died on Monday following the single-vehicle crash the night before in Armoy.

The collision involving a silver Peugeot 207 happened on the Coolkeeran Road at around 11.30pm on Sunday.

The father-of-one was treated at the scene upon the arrival of emergency services, but later died of his injuries in hospital.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash and have urged witnesses or those with dash-cam footage to contact them.

Causeway Coast and Glens deputy mayor, the SDLP’s Margaret Anne McKillop, offered condolences to Mr Scally’s family and friends.

“It is never easy to lose a loved one, particularly in circumstances like these and my heart goes out to them,” she said.

“Mr Scally was from the Ballycastle area and I know that the community will be reeling from his death at such a young age. This is a tight-knit area and people here will support the Scally family in any way they can as they come to terms with their loss.”

In a statement, Ballycastle United soccer team paid tribute to Mr Scally, who they said was a “keen supporter” of the club.

“Both he and his son Caolan would regularly attend games and cheer on the team,” a spokesperson said.

“Michael was also involved with the (club’s) academy, helping to coach Caolan’s 2012 team. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Scally family at this difficult time.

“The players will always remember him. As a coach and a friend he will be greatly missed.”

A death notice described Mr Scally as the “much loved son of Ann and the late Kevin, adored father to Caolan and cherished uncle, cousin, nephew and friend to so many”.

His funeral will take place on Thursday at St. Patrick’s & St. Brigid’s Church in Ballycastle, followed by a burial service at St Olcan’s Cemetery in Armoy.

More than 200 people have now died on the roads across the island so far this year.
