The GAA and Gaelic Players Association (GPA) have backed calls for an “immediate and sustained ceasefire” in Gaza.

In a joint statement, the two organisations said it was also supporting appeals for aid to reach Gaza and for hostages to be released.

It comes amid continuing devastation in Gaza, which in recent days has seen an Israeli air strike on displaced people in Rafah.

Renewed Israeli shelling and strikes killed at least 37 people in the latest attack, most of them sheltering in tents, outside the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

The strikes overnight and on Tuesday pummelled the same area where strikes had triggered a deadly fire that swept through a camp for displaced Palestinian.

“The GAA and the GPA share the deep concerns expressed by many of our members about the ongoing humanitarian crisis and escalating violence in Gaza,” the statement said.

“We support the Irish government and international community’s calls for an immediate and sustained ceasefire which will allow aid to reach Gaza and for all hostages to be released.

“We will be donating to the Irish Red Cross to support relief work in Gaza.”
