A campaign group set up by GAA members will stage a series of events next week to mark 300 days of Israeli military attacks in Gaza that have resulted in almost 40,000 people being killed.

Gaels Against Genocide has previously called for an end to the Israeli military campaign in Gaza.

More than 38,000 Palestinians, including thousands of woman and children, have been killed in the region since last October.

Israel launched the current operation after around 1,200 people were killed during a Hamas-led attack inside Israeli territory last October, during which around 200 hostages were taken.

Despite international pressure Israeli authorities have refused to call a permanent halt to their ongoing campaign.

Both the GAA and Gaelic Players Association have recently backed calls for a ceasefire on humanitarian grounds.

Gaels across Ireland, including Tyrone, Antrim, Armagh and Dublin have now organised a series of events to mark the 300-day milestone.

In Tyrone a special talk will take place at the Garvaghey Centre on August 3.

Gaels Against Genocide spokesman Michael Doherty urged people to show solidarity with the Palestine.

“With almost 40,000 killed, including over 16,000 children, and over 90,000 injured by Israeli armed forces, it is important for people of all ages and abilities across the 32 counties to continue to show the besieged people of Gaza that they care and will continue to demand an immediate permanent ceasefire, an end to the occupation and the provision of adequate humanitarian aid immediately,” he said.

Mr Doherty said he expects to see support for the Palestinian people to be on show at next weekend’s All-Ireland football final between Armagh and Galway.

“It was heartening to see so many Armagh supporters displaying Palestinian flags at Saturdays All Ireland semi-final and no doubt they will replicate this in the final which will be watched by millions across the globe,” he said.
