Sinn Féin have co-opted the head of Vice President Michelle O’Neill’s office to its vacant seat on Mid Ulster District Council.
Donna Mullin has been co-opted in to the Cookstown DEA, replacing former mayor Cathal Mallaghan who was elected as the new MP for Mid Ulster in this month’s Westminster election.
Ms Mullin has served as the party’s ‘Head of VP Office’ for First Minister O’Neill since 2020 and has been a close aide of the Mid Ulster MLA in that time.
Former mayor Mr Mallaghan won a majority of just under 15,000 votes at the election on 4 July, after being selected as his party’s candidate following veteran Francie Molloy’s decision to step down.
Mr Mallaghan had served as the party’s group leader at Mid Ulster council until his election, a role which is now understood to be taken over by Carntogher DEA councillor Brian McGuigan.
In a statement, Mr Mallaghan said: “Donna Mullin is a great addition to the Sinn Féin team on Mid Ulster Council team.
“A former player for Kildress Wolfe Tones GAA club, Donna Mullin is a very active member of her local community.
“She has spent much of her career as a corporate office manager and currently supports the Mid Ulster Constituency Team.
“In her council role, Donna will be focused on supporting local communities and enhancing community infrastructure.”
