Healthcare workers are being urged to attend a vigil in Newry on Friday in solidarity with hospital staff of Gaza.

Since the beginning of Israeli military action in Gaza several hundred healthcare workers have been killed by Israeli forces and more than 1,000 injured.

Deirdre Murphy, a nurse in Daisy Hill said: “Israel’s assault has destroyed most of the hospitals and healthcare centres in Gaza at a time when there has never been more need for their services.

“Because of Israel’s blocking of food, fuel and medical supplies, amputations from bombing injuries are being carried out without anaesthetic, including on children. There is no pain relief or anaesthetic for, for example severe burn victims or women undergoing C sections.

“Disease in the region is spreading quickly among malnourished and starving children and infants.”

The wider community is urged to come and show their support for the Palestinian people, at Daisy Hill Hospital on Friday June 14 at 6pm at the Emergency Department exit.

The vigil is supported by Unison, Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Trade Union Friends of Palestine.
