Hill walkers are being asked not to climb Mount Errigal on Wednesday and possibly Thursday of this week to facilitate a helicopter delivering repair material to a damaged path to the summit.
Work started recently on repair work to a pathway up the iconic Co Donegal mountain which was severely damaged in rain storms in May this year.
Completed in October last year, the pathway was created to protect the mountain from erosion caused by the thousands of walkers who climb Errigal annually. The largest mountain in Donegal, Mount Errigal is particularly popular with holiday-makers during the summer months.
Standing at more than 750 metres, it commands outstanding views of the Poison Glen and west Donegal.
A spokesperson for the Mount Errigal website group asked members of the public to help facilitate repair work on the mountain this week as construction material was being delivered by helicopter.
The spokesperson said: “The helicopter will be working on Errigal on Wednesday 7th August and possibly Thursday, 8th. We ask the public not to climb the mountain on these days as it will not be safe to walk under the helicopter while it is lifting material.
“A stop/go system will also be in operation on the road adjacent to the car park on these days.”
