‘Historic piece of munition’ sparks security alert in Newtownards

A security alert in Co Down has been sparked by the discovery of a suspected historic piece of munition.

Police have asked members of the public to avoid the Rivenwood area of Newtownards after the discovery was made on Friday.

Ammunition Technical Officers arrived at the scene, which remains cordoned off as the alert continues.



A PSNI spokesperson said: “Updates will be provided in due course as the incident develops.

“I appreciate this may cause some disruption, however keeping people safe is paramount and we will not take any risks. I want to thank those who may be affected for their patience at this time.”

In February, a controlled explosion was carried out on an unexploded shell dating from World War 2 discovered in Magilligan, Co Derry.
