A number of residents have been evacuated in the Carnhill area of Derry due to a security alert.

Police were still at the scene on Wednesday morning and said further details to be released later.

SDLP councillor Brian Tierney said he had been made aware that damage had been caused to a number of cars and a caravan, but that suggestions there had been an explosion have not been confirmed at this stage.

He also said that approximately ten houses have been evacuated while police deal with the alert.

The BBC report that three residents heard two loud bangs overnight.

“We were just lying in bed and we just heard two loud bangs,” a resident named Catherine said.

“We both looked at each other, me and my partner, and said ‘that was definitely not a firework, it was definitely more than that’.”

“We didn’t see anything so we just went to sleep, then we just woke up this morning and saw the police.”

Another resident named Lisa also said her vehicle had been damaged.

“I came out of the house and saw that there was four vehicles damaged and mine was one of them, there is a hole on the side of my car,” she said.

“I think it was caused by whatever exploded and it’s obviously hit my car and there’s a hole now on the wing.”

A third resident also said she was woken by “two big bangs” during the night.

“My partner went outside, I think a lot of people did to see what was going on. He then saw that there was a lot of damage to a van, the tyres were burst and wing mirror was damaged.”
