Residents have returned to their homes after evacuation following the discovery of what police have described as an “improvised explosive device”.

The security alert began shortly after 10.55am on Monday when police received a report of a suspicious object in the Barrs Lane area of the city.

Homes were evacuated while the area was sealed off to allow for an inspection by ammunition technical officers.

Residents were invited to take shelter in the nearby Farland Way Community hub and the Ballymagroarty Community Centre.

A PSNI spokesperson said on Monday evening: ”The object, which has been declared as an improvised explosive device, has been removed and taken away for further forensic examinations.
